Detective Beans and the Case of the Missing Hat

by Li Chen

In Li Chen’s comic mystery, Detective Beans, a young cat who takes detective work very seriously, discovers that his detective hat is missing and sets out to recover it. His search leads him through a series of encounters and discoveries, with expressive cartoon artwork, lively dialogue, and visual jokes inviting readers to follow the investigation alongside him.

Big Idea

Good detectives—and thoughtful readers—observe carefully, ask questions, and revise their ideas when new evidence appears. Writers can make even a small problem feel exciting by controlling how quickly readers receive information.

Discussion Questions

1.Why does the missing hat matter so much to Beans? What do his words and actions suggest about how he sees himself?
2.Choose a moment when Beans learns something new. How does that information change his next action, and what would you have done?
3.Where do the pictures tell us something that the words do not? How does that extra information affect our understanding of Beans?
4.Which part of the investigation feels most suspenseful or funniest to you? How do the words, pictures, or panel arrangement create that feeling?
5.How does Beans respond when his investigation does not go as expected? What might readers learn from his response?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45 minutes, following an initial reading of the book or selected sequences.📦 Copies of the book, paper or six-panel comic templates, pencils, crayons or markers, chart paper, and small paper slips for covering final panels.

Learning Goals

Describe Beans’s character using evidence from his actions, dialogue, and illustrations.
Distinguish an observable clue from a guess about what that clue means.
Sequence a short mystery with a problem, an investigation, and a resolution.
Use panel size, dialogue, and a pause before the reveal to influence reading pace.
Revise a comic after hearing how a partner interpreted its clues.

Activity Steps

1.Read or revisit the opening problem and a short investigation sequence. Ask students what Beans wants, what he observes, and what he thinks the observations mean.
2.Make a two-column class chart labeled “What we notice” and “What we think.” Record picture and text evidence separately from predictions.
3.Model a six-panel plan: introduce a missing object, show the search beginning, present clue one, present clue two, pause for a prediction, and reveal a solution. Explain that students are inventing a new mystery.
4.Students draw and write their comics. Encourage a brief speech balloon, a clear visual clue, and a mostly wordless fifth panel that slows the reader just before the answer.
5.Partners cover the final panel, read the first five, and explain their predictions using clues. They then uncover the ending and discuss whether it fits the evidence.
6.Students revise one unclear clue or one pacing choice and share how their change helps the reader.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

Detective Beans and the Case of the Missing Hat makes a useful pacing study because its central problem is easy to understand: Beans needs to find his detective hat. That clear goal lets readers concentrate on how the story unfolds. Each encounter can change what Beans knows, what readers predict, and how urgently they want to continue. His serious approach to detective work also creates opportunities to study the relationship between suspense and comedy. As a comic, the book shows that writing craft extends beyond sentences. Speech balloons, facial expressions, panel sequences, and the placement of a discovery all help determine the reading experience. A reader may move quickly through an exchange of dialogue but linger over a reaction or a picture containing useful information. Invite students to test those possibilities on actual pages rather than assume that every short panel is fast or every large panel is slow. Use a Pace-Write-Read cycle: first notice a pacing choice in a selected sequence, then try a similar choice in an original comic, and finally read the new comic aloud or share it with a partner. The aim is not to copy Li Chen’s plot or drawing style. It is to help children make deliberate decisions about when to give information, when to withhold it, and when to let an image carry the story.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pacing	Compare a sequence in which Beans moves through his investigation with one in which he stops to look or react. Ask where students read quickly or slowly and which words or visual choices influenced them.
Plot	Map the missing-hat problem, Beans’s investigative actions, and the resolution. Connect events with “because” and “so” to show how an investigation becomes a connected story rather than merely a list of encounters.
Prosody	Read Beans’s speech balloons aloud with phrasing that fits his expression and the situation. Try a serious detective delivery and a neutral delivery, then discuss how the choice changes the humor or urgency.
Word	Select an actual word from a balloon or caption that helps communicate Beans’s confidence, curiosity, or concern. Substitute a different word and ask how the character’s attitude changes.
Concept	Explore how the familiar problem of losing a hat becomes a detective case. Students can transform another everyday problem into a story premise by giving a character a strong goal and a distinctive approach.
Voice & Worldview	Notice how Beans’s detective identity shapes the way he treats the missing hat. Discuss how a character who sees an ordinary event as an important case gives the story its distinctive voice.
Point of View	Track what Beans knows and what readers can see in the panels; these may not always be identical. Redraw one moment from another character’s position and discuss what information would become visible or disappear.
Setting & Place	Use backgrounds in the search sequences to identify where Beans is and how he moves between places. Ask which setting details orient the reader and which might matter to the investigation.
Original Characters	Study how Beans combines a recognizable detective role with his own appearance, behavior, and earnest attitude. Have students create a detective with a different animal identity, motivation, or working habit.
Dialogue	Find an exchange in which Beans’s questions or another character’s response moves the search forward. Discuss how dialogue can supply information while also revealing personality.
Details	Inspect a selected panel for small details that help readers understand Beans’s situation. Separate details that support a prediction from details that primarily establish character or create humor.
Descriptions	Ask students to describe Beans or a location using only what they can verify in the artwork. Compare their descriptive sentences with the comic’s ability to communicate those features without additional prose.
Firsts	Examine Beans’s first appearance and the first moment the missing hat becomes a problem. Ask what readers learn immediately and what questions the opening leaves unanswered.
Immediacy & Engagement	Notice how a concrete missing object gives readers an immediate goal to follow. Invite students to begin their own mysteries with a visible problem rather than a long explanation of the detective’s background.
Story Scenes, Summaries & Structures	Choose a fully pictured exchange and compare it with a transition that moves the investigation onward. Discuss which moments deserve several panels and which can be communicated briefly.
Tension / Suspense / Surprise	Pause before a discovery or response and ask what students expect Beans to learn. After reading onward, distinguish uncertainty about what will happen from surprise when something unexpected occurs.
Flashback, Flash-Forward, Cliffhanger	Check the selected pages for an actual shift in time or an unresolved stopping point; do not assume all three devices occur. If no time shift appears, students can invent a clearly labeled “earlier” panel about a hat’s last known location as an extension.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Inspect a page ending during Beans’s search and ask whether it encourages a prediction or leaves a question open. Discuss chapter breaks only where the classroom edition actually provides them.
Pace & Creativity	Redraw a short investigative moment in two panels and then in five. Compare how the extra panels create space for observation, hesitation, or a comic reaction.
Play	Explore the playful idea of a cat treating a missing hat as a serious detective case. Students can experiment with giving another small everyday problem the language and importance of a grand investigation.
Performance	Perform a short conversation from the book, using gestures based on the characters’ poses. Keep a silent beat where the pictures show a reaction, and discuss how that beat affects the scene.
Personality	Gather examples of what Beans says, does, and visibly feels during the search. Use that evidence to describe his personality rather than relying only on his detective title.
Humor	Choose a moment students find funny and identify whether the humor comes from words, expressions, an unexpected event, or Beans’s serious attitude. Ask whether explaining the joke in an extra caption would improve it or weaken it.
Pause	Look for a reaction or observation panel that invites readers to linger during the investigation. Try adding a wordless pause before a reveal in a student comic and test its effect.
Poetry / Poetic Devices	Inspect a selected passage for sound play, repeated sounds, or unusually vivid phrasing, using only examples actually present. If none appear, treat an alliterative detective caption as a writing experiment rather than a feature of Chen’s text.
Repetition	Track how references to the hat or Beans’s detective role keep the central goal in view. Distinguish a repeated story concern from an exact repeated phrase, and discuss how each can help readers follow the case.
Rhythm	Read a sequence of balloons and panels aloud, noticing the pattern of speech, action, and reaction. Experiment with removing one reaction panel to hear and see how the sequence’s rhythm changes.
Punctuation	Find punctuation in Beans’s dialogue that signals a question, strong feeling, or a pause. Read the same balloon with a different punctuation mark and explain how its meaning or delivery changes.
Questions	Collect questions Beans asks and questions readers ask while following the missing-hat case. Identify which lead to useful information and which remain predictions that need evidence.
Compare-Contrast	Compare Beans’s expectations with what actually happens in a chosen encounter. Use a two-column chart to explore how that difference produces new information, tension, or comedy.
Objects	Discuss how the hat functions both as the missing object that drives the plot and as something connected to Beans’s detective identity. Ask how the story might feel different if he were searching for an object he cared about less.
Threes	Check a selected sequence for a genuine three-part pattern in actions, images, or dialogue; do not impose one on the book. As an extension, students can invent three search attempts and decide whether the third should confirm or overturn expectations.
Lists	Build a class list of verified observations from Beans’s investigation, clearly separating it from guesses. Discuss how a list summarizes information differently from panels that show events unfolding.
White Space & Negative Space	Examine the spaces between panels and any uncluttered areas around Beans or other characters. Ask how those spaces help direct attention or make a reaction easier to notice.
Art & Graphics	Read a short sequence with its words temporarily covered and infer the action from expressions, poses, and backgrounds. Restore the words and identify what each mode contributes to understanding the case.
Interactives & Gamification	Turn a selected investigation sequence into a classroom prediction checkpoint: students record an observation, propose an explanation, and revise it after reading onward. This is a teaching adaptation, not a claim that the book contains game instructions.
Placement	Notice where speech balloons, characters, and important objects sit within a selected page. Trace the intended reading path and discuss how the placement controls when readers notice information.
Form	Explore how the comic format divides Beans’s investigation into visible moments. Rewrite a brief sequence as prose and compare what becomes more explicit and what visual timing is lost.
Dummy	Make a rough folded-paper mock-up of an original missing-object mystery before producing finished art. Move the reveal between pages to test how a page turn changes suspense, using Beans’s investigation as the mentor example.
Passion	Discuss how Beans’s commitment to being a detective makes the missing hat important to him and interesting to readers. Invite students to give their own detective a genuine enthusiasm that shapes the investigation.

Pace-Write It!

Twenty-minute task: “Wait—Where’s the Hat?” Students create an original four-panel scene inspired by Beans’s missing-hat investigation, not a replacement for the book’s actual ending. Minutes 0–3: Revisit one short search sequence. Identify Beans’s goal and one place where an image or reaction changes the reading pace. Minutes 3–5: Model a four-panel plan: (1) the detective notices the hat is missing, (2) the detective spots a visible clue, (3) a mostly wordless pause invites a prediction, and (4) the invented location of the hat is revealed. Emphasize that the clue must make sense after the reveal. Minutes 5–12: Students draw their scenes and add one or two brief speech balloons. They may use Beans for this classroom response or invent their own detective; label the work as an imagined scene. Minutes 12–17: Partners cover panel four, read the first three panels, and predict the hat’s location using visual evidence. They uncover the reveal and discuss whether the pause made them curious and whether the clue supported the solution. Minutes 17–20: Each student revises one balloon, clue, or panel to improve clarity or pacing, then completes the reflection: “I slowed the reader down by ___ so they would ___.” Materials: paper divided into four panels, pencils, crayons, and a small cover slip.

Classroom Activities

The Missing Hat: Clue, Pause, Reveal

Students become comic creators and design a six-panel mini-mystery inspired by Beans’s search for his detective hat. They use an ordinary missing object, two observable clues, and a deliberately placed pause to help a partner predict the solution before revealing it. Suggested for grades 1–3, with drawing, dictation, or independent writing options; this is an original companion activity rather than a retelling of the book’s ending.
